The debts quickly started to mount up for Josh’s mum and dad – the mortgage was Dave’s biggest worry.

Dave had been out of work for months. The rejection letters were getting to him and he stopped seeing mates. He didn’t even want to have a kick-about with Josh.

Josh’s mum Mandy, told us "we couldn’t even afford essentials. Some days we only had one meal – it was awful to hear all the kids’ tummies rumbling".

With their school uniforms starting to look shabby, Josh and Georgia started to get teased. Eventually they stopped going out to play altogether.

Martin, a Home-Start volunteer, started to support the family – giving Mandy a lift to hospital appointments, helping Dave look for work and even getting a grant for a new washing machine.

First Mandy broke her arm at work, then the washing machine packed up. With a baby in the house, the washing soon started to pile up.

At last Dave got what he was waiting for – a new job. With Mandy’s arm still on the mend, Home-Start volunteer Martin helped out while Dave was at work.
