Explore Emily’s story
When her sister was diagnosed with a rare condition, Emily’s parents couldn’t give her much attention. She became quiet and withdrawn.
“After Chloe was diagnosed with Solar Urticaria, we were in pieces. She couldn’t go out in sunlight – no fun in the park, no building sandcastles, no paddling pool.”
“All our attention turned to Chloe because she was so ill. Emily was missing out on so much. But we just didn’t realise.”
“Chloe just wouldn’t sleep for any length of time. That took its toll on the whole family, even Emily.”
Understandably, Rachel and Liam spent all their time worrying about Chloe. Poor Emily hardly got a look-in.
The family contacted Home-Start. One of our volunteers, Diane, helped them make sense of what they were entitled to – like benefits and respite care.
Emily should have been spending time with her family. Instead, she spent hours alone in her room.
Diane’s visits helped Rachel and Liam look forward to the future. The pressure on the whole family finally started to lift.
With Diane looking after Chloe, Rachel could spend time with her eldest daughter again.
With Home-Start’s support, Emily’s dad Liam has time to take her to the park again. The family’s starting to see glimpses of the happy-go-lucky girl she used to be.
